Sunday Still Life Painting Workshop: Leafy Lemons

Join us for a relaxed and enriching Sunday workshop exploring still life painting in either acrylics or oils, centred around the fresh, vibrant subject of leafy lemons set against soft, painterly backgrounds. With the same gentle rhythm as Sophie’s previous Sunday sessions, the day includes a morning and afternoon studio session, with an hour's lunch break to wander the farmer’s market right on our doorstep.
In the morning, we’ll begin by some quick sketching, understanding shapes and ways to build form. Next we will learn how to build a foundation to our paintings with a thinned monochrome underpainting. Working directly from observation, you’ll map out your composition, focusing on proportion, placement, and the essential relationship between tones, light and shadow. This stage is about simplifying forms, loosening up, and learning to see tonal values clearly before building in colour and detail.
As the session develops, we’ll gradually build layers of paint, exploring how to create depth and form through careful observation and thoughtful mark-making. You’ll be guided through understanding your palette, learning how to mix harmonious warm and cool tones, shadow and light and how subtle shifts in colour can bring your painting to life.
After lunch, we’ll continue developing the still life, refining details and strengthening contrasts. You’ll explore how to model form through light and shadow, capturing the roundness of the lemons, the delicacy and detailing of the leaves, and the softness of the background. The focus is on building confidence with paint handling, developing sensitivity to colour, and enjoying the tactile, immersive nature of the process.
This workshop offers a calm and supportive space to deepen your painting practice, whether you’re new to acrylics/ oils or looking to expand your skills. By the end of the day, you’ll have created a beautifully layered still life painting, full of depth, colour, and character.
