Afternoon session- 1.30-4pm

Inspired by the exquisite natural-history illustrations of Jean Varany, this one-day workshop explores the fascinating forms, colours and textures of the underwater world. We’ll look closely at cephalopods, octopus and other sea creatures, using watercolour and ink to create detailed, atmospheric paintings inspired by the natural world.
The day will combine careful observation and drawing with expressive watercolour techniques, exploring how to capture the delicate translucency, pattern, movement and character of marine life.
A full-day watercolour workshop exploring colour and layering techniques. No experience necessary – beginners welcome!
We’ll begin by looking at examples of natural-history artwork and at the remarkable structures and patterns found in sea creatures. Using reference material, we’ll make observational studies of octopus, squid and other marine forms, focusing on shape, proportion, tentacles, pattern and texture.
We’ll then introduce ink, experimenting with fine line, delicate detailing and ink washes to describe form and create tonal depth. These studies will provide the foundation for developing a more finished watercolour painting.
Lunch 12.30pm–1.30pm
Enjoy lunch at the Farmer’s Market on our doorstep.
In the afternoon, we’ll develop a finished ink and watercolour painting inspired by our morning studies. We’ll explore transparent washes, layering and glazing to build colour gradually, as well as techniques for creating the subtle tonal changes, translucency and rich markings found in marine life.
We’ll consider how to combine fine ink drawing with fluid watercolour, using line and wash to bring out the intricate details of tentacles, shells, suckers and patterned surfaces, while allowing the watercolour to create a sense of atmosphere and movement.
