Inspired by the drawings and paintings of Suzy Fasht and Sophie Charalambous, this one-day workshop explores the joyful, abundant gardens, houses and street scenes they capture in their work.  We will be learning how to bring character and atmosphere to our drawings and paintings by learning how to combine pencil, inks and watercolours.

We’ll take inspiration from distinctive architecture, colourful facades, windows, doorways and overflowing gardens, exploring how houses and nature can come together in one lively composition. We’ll look at the way plants, trees and flowers spill across walls, paths and gardens, creating paintings that capture both a sense of place and tell a story.

No experience necessary – beginners welcome!

Suitable for all levels, with demonstrations and individual guidance throughout the day.

Morning session

Drawing from observation using houses, we’ll be drawing from observation, looking at a range of paintings of houses, gardens, plants and architectural details as inspiration.

Working with pen and ink, we’ll explore expressive line, varied mark-making and ink washes to build structure, tone and detail.

Lunch 12.30pm–1.30pm

Enjoy lunch at the Farmer’s Market on our doorstep.

In the afternoon, we will begin to add watercolour to our work, adding transparent washes, layering and colour mixing.  Learning how to develop your ink drawings with expressive mark-making and more opaque areas of colour.  Explore how colour and tone can bring houses and verdant gardens to life, creating vibrant paintings with a strong sense of atmosphere and place.

You’ll have plenty of time to develop your own composition, bringing together glimpses of houses, gardens and surrounding planting in a personal, contemporary way. You’ll be encouraged to play with scale, pattern, colour and detail while retaining the freshness and spontaneity of the original drawing.
