Sunday Botanical Drawing and Painting Workshop
From Life: Ink, Watercolour & Mixed Media
Join us for a vibrant and inspiring Sunday workshop dedicated to drawing from life using expressive inks, luminous watercolours and layered mixed media. This is a day about truly seeing — and translating what’s in front of us into drawings that feel alive, generous and full of energy.
The workshop follows the same rhythm as Sophie’s previous Sunday sessions, with a morning and afternoon in the studio, and an hour’s lunch at the local farmer’s market right on our doorstep.
Morning session- 10-12.30pm
Lunch 12.30-1.30pm
Afternoon session- 1.30-4pm
A full-day drawing workshop exploring line, tone, and colour through expressive botanical studies.
In the morning, we’ll begin with observational drawing, tuning into proportion, shape and structure. Working directly from life, we’ll explore how to build form through confident ink lines, varied mark-making and sensitive attention to light. You’ll learn how to create a convincing sense of volume using light, shadow and mid-tones — understanding how subtle shifts in tone can turn flat shapes into solid, breathing forms.
Throughout the day, we’ll layer a variety of materials — fluid ink washes, transparent watercolour, coloured pencils and pens and fineliner details — discovering how different mediums can work together to create richness and depth. Sophie will guide you through colour mixing and colour matching, helping you notice the quiet temperature shifts and nuanced hues that make your subject feel present and real.
In the afternoon session, we’ll focus on building depth and vitality — allowing colour to move, lines to dance, and textures to emerge. You’ll explore ways to balance control with looseness, structure with spontaneity, giving your drawings both strength and life.
This Sunday workshop promises a playful, immersive day of looking closely, working boldly and embracing the joy of mixed media — leaving with artwork that feels vibrant, dimensional and unmistakably your own.
Paper, boards, pencils, erasers and water pots and a selection of colour tools will be provided but please bring any mixed media you enjoy working with, whether coloured pencils, felt tip pens, inks or water based paint and Sophie will show you how to get the best out of them.
Maximum 8 Students. The course fee includes materials as described above.
