3 January Introduction into oil painter’s materials for new students (please bring your notebook and pen)

Tone and its role in painting. Creating tonal value scale (materials: raw umber, ivory black, white, small to medium size board, hog long flat brush, dilutant, ruler, pencil)

 

10 January Rembrandt – his tonal range and impasto technique Rembrandt’s portrait copy

(12’’x16’’ canvas board, pigments: raw umber, burnt sienna, red ochre, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, white, sketch book, soft graphite pencil)

 

17 January Portrait copy continued.

 

24 January Drawing and painting eyes, nose, mouth (range of graphite pencils, 2 sheets A3 drawing paper, canvas board, pigments: raw umber, white, blue, ochres and siennas)

 

31 January Painting self-portrait. First approach – the self-portrait from life (Materials: 40 x 40cm or 16 x 12 inches white canvas board, pigments: raw umber, burnt sienna, red ochre, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, white, mirror, soft graphite pencil, A3 drawing paper)

 

7 February Painting self-portrait from life continued. Discussing next week’s subject.

 

14 February: Half Term

 

21 February – the self-portrait from photographs. (Materials: full colour palette, 16x12 inches white canvas board, sketch book, soft graphite pencil, A3 drawing paper)

 

28 February Painting self-portrait from photographs continued

 

6 March Winter landscape using palette knife (10’’x14’’ canvas board, full colour palette, palette knife)
