This course is designed to deepen your understanding of visual language and enhance your proficiency in oil painting. Through a structured series of exercises and projects, you will develop technical skills, explore different painting techniques, and refine your artistic expression.
Key Learning Areas:
· Advanced colour mixing and blending techniques
· Still life compositions with focus on form, specific colour palette, different sources of light
· Impasto texture using palette knives
· Limited palette challenges for tonal and atmospheric effects
· Chiaroscuro and monochrome underpainting, inspired by Renaissance masters
· Alla prima (wet-on-wet) painting
· Master copy studies from Impressionist painters
· Icon painting techniques
· Student-led projects, including plain air or interior painting
· further development of skills in depicting different textures
Autumn Term 2025 Course Schedule
1. Still life with toys. How to move the paint to achieve different textures.
2. Second session of still life with toys. Working on details.
3. Painting drapes and folds. Rubens, Gainsborough, Sargent
4. Painting an interior. Degas, Hockney, Freud, Bonnard
5. Landscape. Subject – hills and mountains. Choosing the right palette for the subjects, focusing on the linear and aerial perspective.
6. Alla prima. Still life with fish. Impasto texture practice: use a palette knife to apply thick layers of paint.
7. Autumn Still life: two sessions. Working with the warmth and richness of autumn colours. Inspiration: Joachim Beuckelaer, Adriaen Coorte, Gustave Courbet
8. Continue developing colour mixing and blending. Second session of Autumn still life.
9. Learning how to paint an icon. History, order, technique.
10. Second session on painting an icon
11. Painting the same landscape at different times of day
12. Students’ project e.g. painting each other or Christmas subjects
