This course develops drawing and painting skills through observation, colour, composition, and historical inspiration. Students will explore portraiture, landscape, still life, and expressive painting approaches while experimenting with a range of materials and techniques.
Lesson 1 — Autumn Landscape at Chiswick House or landscape painting inspired by Autumn at Chiswick House.
· Observe seasonal colour and atmosphere
· Practice composition and perspective
· Introduce layering in painting
Lesson 2 — Drawing Faces
· learning how to draw
· Understand proportions of the head
· Practice drawing eyes, nose, mouth, and ears
· Develop observational drawing skills
Materials
Pencils, charcoal, mirrors, cartridge paper.

Complete three small facial expression sketches.
Lesson 3 — Portrait from a Model (Session 1) in oil
· Capture overall head structure
· Measure proportions accurately
· Blocking in the head shape and shoulders

Lesson 4 — Portrait from a Model (Session 2)
· Refine tonal values and likeness
· Strengthen understanding of light and shadow.Focus on edges
· Refine details and background
Lesson 5 — English Romantic Landscape
Romantic landscape painting inspired by English countryside scenes (with sheep and barns).
· Explore mood and atmosphere in landscape art
· Learn depth through tonal perspective
· Study works by Constable and Turner
· Sketch landscape compositions including sheep
· Paint dramatic skies and rolling hills

Lesson 6 — Studying glass and metal objects and abstract simplification inspired by Ben Nicholson (Session 1)
· Observe reflections and transparency
· Simplify forms into shapes and tonal planes
· Understand composition with overlapping objects

Create small tonal studies of reflective objects.
Lesson 7 — Painting Glass in the Style of Ben Nicholson (Session 2)
· Develop harmony between shape and tone
· Refine edges and layered paint application
· Add tonal contrasts and highlights
Lesson 8 — Impressionist floral or fruit Still Life (possible palette knife painting)
· Explore loose brushwork and broken colour
· Observe changing light and colour relationships
· Paint quickly and directly from observation
· Build depth using colour temperature

Study Monet, Renoir, and Cezanne
Visit a gallery and choose a favourite Impressionists’ works.
Lesson 9 — Still Life with Mirror (Reflections and Light Study)
· Explore reflective surfaces and how mirrors distort and duplicate objects within a composition
· Observe changes in value, proportion, and perspective between real objects and their reflected forms
· Build depth by using light, shadow, and colour temperature differences between foreground objects and reflected space
Lesson 10 — Fauvism and Colour Theory
· Study Matisse, Derain, and Vlaminck
· non-naturalistic colour use
· Explore emotional impact of colour
· Experiment with bold brushwork
· Colour mixing exercises using complementary contrasts
Materials
Collect magazine images with strong colour combinations
Lesson 11 — Scottish Colourists: Seascape or Winter Scene
· Explore colour harmony and atmospheric light
· Study the work of the Scottish Colourists, including Samuel Peploe and Francis Cadell
· Develop expressive brushwork and simplified form
Lesson 12 — Christmas Project art
Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Aubrey Beardsley
