This course is designed to deepen your understanding of visual language and enhance your proficiency in oil painting. Through a structured series of exercises and projects, you will develop technical skills, explore different painting techniques, and refine your artistic expression.

Key Learning Areas:

·     Advanced colour mixing and blending techniques

·     Still life compositions with focus on form, specific colour palette, different sources of light

·     Impasto texture using palette knives

·     Limited palette challenges for tonal and atmospheric effects

·     Chiaroscuro and monochrome underpainting, inspired by Renaissance masters

·     Alla prima (wet-on-wet) painting

·     Master copy studies from Impressionist painters

·     Icon painting techniques

·     Student-led projects, including plain air or interior painting

·     further development of skills in depicting different textures

Spring Term 2026 Course Schedule

1. Winter landscape

Learn to depict a cold, atmospheric environment using a limited colour palette and emphasis on mood. Use references of snowy or overcast landscapes. Study how light reflects off snow and how shadows behave in a white environment.

Good canvas up to 30×40cm

2. Still Life with Metal Objects (2 Sessions)

Develop skills in rendering reflective surfaces and complex light behaviour. Block in major shapes and value patterns in monochrome (grisaille or charcoal). Good canvas up to 30×40 or 35×45cm.

3.Still Life with Metal Objects

Paint the still life with full colour, observing how the surrounding environment reflects in the metal. Focus on subtle value shifts and edge control.

4. Painting Clouds from References and Copying

 Understand cloud structure, atmosphere, and colour transitions in the sky. Start with quick studies focusing on shape, form, and softness. Copy one or two master paintings with expressive clouds (e.g., J.M.W. Turner or John Constable).Practice blending techniques and soft edge transitions. Canvas 25×30cm or bigger.

5.Figure Quick Sketches in Oil (up to 4 per lesson)

Improve figure drawing accuracy, gesture, and painting speed. Use of photo references or live models. Focus on gesture, proportions, and large colour/value blocks rather than detail. limited palettes (e.g., Zorn palette) for efficiency. 4 small canvas boards or one 35×45 or 40×50cm.

6. Seaside Landscape

Capture the movement, texture, and lighting of coastal environments. References with waves, cliffs, sand, boats, or piers. Study how water reflects sky colour and how light hits the waves. Use expressive brushwork for movement and texture. Canvas 30×40cm.

7. Drawing and Painting Hands (from cast and references)

Master one of the most expressive and technically challenging parts of the figure. Break down the anatomy: focus on bone structure, tendons, and gesture. Start with drawings (charcoal or graphite), then move into small oil studies. Canvas 25×35, 30×40cm.

8. Still Life in the Style of Van Gogh

Explore expressive colour, brushwork, and emotional impact in still life. Analyse Van Gogh’s still life paintings (e.g., "Sunflowers", "Vase with Irises") Use thick, expressive brushwork and bright, unnatural colour contrasts. Canvas 30×40cm and bigger.

9. Cityscape ( 2 sessions)

Learn to paint urban scenes with attention to perspective, architecture, and atmosphere. Start with a linear sketch focusing on perspective and composition. Use a limited palette to capture light and shadow accurately.

10. Cityscape 2nd session

Add small figures or vehicles to bring life and scale to the scene Canvas 30×40cm.

11. Still Life in the Style of Linda Alexander

Study contemporary realism with a soft, luminous aesthetic. Use strong, focused lighting and a dark or neutral background.  Canvas 20×25cm.

12.  Landscape with a Figure

Combine figure and landscape elements harmoniously. Practice composing multiple thumbnails before starting the final piece. Focus on scale relationships and how light affects both the figure and the setting. Canvas 30×40 or students’s choice.
