2 Simple still life in grisaille technique, second session
How light models the form. How to get the illusion of 3D on canvas. Learning the importance of hard and soft edges.
3 How to start a still life in colour
Use of a frame to help with the composition. Simplifying tonal masses. “Fat over Lean” rule. How to draw a mug. Basics of perspective.
4 Working on the silhouette
Painting light objects against dark background, trying to create harmonious subtle opaque tints unified by light. Working on imprimatura. Continuing to learn how to get the right hue: value and saturation.
5 Still life with flowers
Alla prima painting using color-blocking approach. Masses in colour blocks directly using little underdrawing. Palette knife technique.
6. Spring landscape (using reference or painting outside)
Finding the right hues to create spring palette of colours for landscape.
7. Domestic still life with drapes and patterns, first session
Working on composition in preliminary sketches. Importance of good drawing, underpainting and learning how to paint patterns.
8. Domestic still life with drapes and patterns, second session
Using glazing and scumbling to deepen the colours and soften the edges of the objects.
9. Still life under very bright light
Using limited palette following traditions of the Renaissance painters. Learning how and when to create soft and sharp edges.
10. Painting a landscape from reference
Composition of the landscape ; how to choose what to focus on. Balance of the abstract masses in the landscape. Secrets of aerial perspective.
