Painting at Pett Level in Rye

with Nick Archer

We are excited to continue our programme of weekend art courses in 2024 with experienced tutor Nick Archer. The courses are based just outside of Rye in the beautiful Wealden countryside, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Painting Weekend 8-9 June 2024

The June workshop will be based at the awe-inspiring coastal location of Pett Level.  Pett Level has been the inspiration for many artists, including John Everett Millais and in more recent times Fred Cuming RA. It has also been the location for many films and has beautiful costal scenes including the 8000-year-old fossilised forest which can be seen at low tide as well as spectacular inland views from the beach. The workshop will involve painting and drawing directly from observation at Pett Level, which is a twenty minute drive from Blackwall Studio, collecting reference material through drawing and using this to create art works in the studio. The amount of time spent on the beach will be dependent on weather.

The groups are small (6 people maximum) and are tailored to all abilities from complete beginners to those with more experience. The workshop will explore ways to observe the landscape directly as well as how to collect reference material so painting can be completed back in the studio.

Accommodation is available at discounted rates at the nearby Flackley Ash Hotel on the Friday and Saturday nights. There is a choice of a standard or superior room and the hotel facilities such as the pool and spa are available for use. Breakfast to the value of £20 will be provided at the hotel and lunch provided at the studio.

Price includes lunches and easels, drawing boards andpalettes. A full list of materials to bring will be sent out in advance of the weekend.
