Weekend Introduction to Printmaking in Rye

We are excited to continuing our programme of weekend art courses in 2024 with experienced tutor Nick Archer. The courses are based just outside of Rye in the beautiful Wealden countryside, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Courses include Painting from the Landscape, Printmaking, Life drawing and Portrait painting.
Introduction to Printmaking Weekend 23-24 March 2024
The course will be based in the studio at Blackwall Farmhouse in the grounds of the tutor’s house.
The groups are small (6 people maximum) and are tailored to all abilities from complete beginners to those with more experience. This workshop will be based on the Saturday at the Peasmarsh studio and then on the Sunday in the print room at Rye Creative Centre. Transport between venues can be provided if accommodation is selected.
Accommodation is provided at discounted rates at the nearby Flackley Ash hotel on the nights of Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd March. There is a choice of a standard or superior room and the hotel facilities such as the pool and spa are available for use. Breakfast to the value of £17 will be provided at the hotel and lunch provided at the studio.
Price includes lunches and all materials, except: paper which can be purchased at the studio, oil paints (if you want specific colours), and your own reference material such as photographs and drawings to work from.

Monoprinting and Collography
Monoprint is the technique of painting onto a smooth printing plate and then printing this onto paper creating ‘one off’ prints.
Collography is creating plates to print using materials and surfaces with texture.
Nick will teach you the process of making a print using these techniques and help you to develop your visual ideas.

10am Explore monoprint techniques using acetate sheets.
1pm Lunch
1.45pm Short presentation about relevant artists
2.00pm Create collagraph plates using textures and materials
3.45pm Tea/Coffee and group discussion of the day’s work
Sunday 24th May: Rye Creative Centre
10am Meet at Rye Creative Centre (transport can be provided if you are staying at the Flackley Ash)
Explore monoprint techniques on Rochat etching press.
Develop further monoprint techniques.
1pm Lunch
1.45pm Print collagraph plates created the previous day
3.45pm Tea/Coffee and group discussion of weekend’s work
