The Beginners' Art Club is an introduction to multiple techniques in a group exploring the Arts for the first time: it is a great environment for you to start finding out what materials you prefer to work with.

Casual creativity for all ages
Each week you will learn the skills required to draw and paint beautiful artworks. Our experienced teachers use a step-by-step approach which allows students to work at their own pace, in a happy, relaxed and sociable environment.
You will learn how to use a range of materials including acrylics, watercolours, oil pastels and pencils, and we encourage you to maintain a sketchbook journal.
The course covers a broad range of subject matter, from still life compositions, figurative work and landscape and we will cover contemporary and abstract studies.
Beginners’ Art Club Recommended Materials
The list below suggests art materials that you will need during the term. You don’t need all of the materials at once. We will be starting the term using pencil and ink and segue into pastel, watercolours, and acrylic.
Pencils - Selection of soft to hard Pencils 2H, B, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B

Paper- I supply basic cartridge paper that is good for drawing and ink. For watercolour, pastel and acrylic, you need something with more weight. You can buy this from me or buy an A3 pad of mixed media. Smooth paper, 300gm.

A3 Pad Cartridge sketch book/ Optional over 150gsm ( I provide cartridge paper but if you would like to work in a sketchbook this would be the right size.)

Drawing nibs and nib holders.
Soft Pastels- there is a wide range of soft pastel sets available. Below is a fairly reliable set with a good selection of colours. The more you pay, the better the quality and range of colour.

Set of Watercolour Paints- Pans are more practical than tubes. The more expensive the brand the better quality paint you are getting ie. they have a higher pigment content. Avoid cheap sets of paints with lots of colours, you will find that the more expensive pigments such as cadmiums are missing and the colour quality is not so good. Colours may have the same names but different brands will vary. Daler-Rowney Artists’ or Winsor & Newton and Cotman are good quality brands.
Set of Watercolour Brushes. Acrylic /Synthetic brushes are fine for beginners and you will be able to use these for both watercolours and acrylics. The more expensive sable brushes hold more water and paint and can only be used for watercolours.

A3 Pad Watercolour Paper. Comes in different weights and different surfaces – Smooth/fine hot press and rough, textured is cold press. A good way to try out papers is to get a small trial/selection pack or buy some single sheets. Different makes have different qualities, some are more absorbent, some tougher, there are also different shades of white. You can also use 300gm cartridge paper.
I provide watercolour paper and charge between 50p and £1 for a sheet of A3 paper, or you can buy your own.
