Autumn term programme
This term we focus on three basic techniques: mono printing, lino cutting and gelli plate printing. Most materials are supplied, but students should have their own Baren, Brayer, Lino and lino tools. If you do not have these already, they can be purchased inexpensively from the tutor. Please let us know if you require these materials when booking.
Mono printing
Master painterly, direct draw mark-making techniques to create one-of-a kind, spontaneous single editions.
Lino Printing
Learn how to handle carving tools safely, cut relief blocks, ink your designs, and pull clean, graphic prints.
Gelli Plate Printing
Experiment with soft, reusable gel plates, paint, image transfers, stencils, and found textures to layer vibrant pattens.
The ancient art of printmaking has always fascinated artists…
No other two-dimensional artform has such a substantial relationship with the physical process of making. The magic and unexpectedness of the creative path - through the stages of idea, making the marks, and pressing the print - has captured the imaginations of artists from Rembrandt to Picasso to specialists in our own time such as Norman Ackroyd.
Printmaking remains an incredibly versatile medium with an amazing range of techniques such as lithography, aquatint, screen printing, woodblock and chine collé, and even in its simplest forms is capable of producing haunting and subtle images. It goes to the heart of what image making is all about, with sometimes rudimentary means yielding endlessly varied and beautiful results.
