Set of Watercolour Paints- The more expensive the colours the better quality paint you are getting ie. they have a higher pigment content. Avoid cheap sets of paints with lots of colours, you will find that the more expensive pigments such as cadmiums are missing and the colour quality is not so good. Colours may have the same names but different brands will vary. Daler-Rowney Artists’ or Winsor & Newton Cotman are good quality brands.
Set of Watercolour Brushes. Size wise a large flat brush or set similar to these https://www.cassart.co.uk/painting/brushes-2/synthetic-1/pro-arte-prolene-plus-synthetic-brush-flat-series-008.htm?nosto=searchpage-nosto-1 and a set of round brushes similar to this set are useful. https://www.cowlingandwilcox.com/watercolour-brushes/3992-da-vinci-cosmotop-spin-5580-single-round-watercolour-brush?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzeHpnK2Q9gIVeIBQBh19LgaOEAQYASABEgJIVPD_BwE#/454-brushes_sizes-size_16. Acrylic /Synthetic brushes are fine for beginners and you will be able to use these for both watercolours and acrylics. The more expensive sable brushes hold more water and paint and can only be used for watercolours.
A3 Pad Watercolour Paper. Comes in different weights and different surfaces – Smooth/fine HP – hot pressed, Medium/NOT or CP- cold pressed and Rough. A good way to try out papers is to get a small trial/selection pack or buy some single sheets. Different makes have different qualities, some are more absorbent, some tougher, there are also different shades of white. For general purposes and demos I use a medium weight, medium surface 140lb/300gsm ‘Bockingford’ Paper. Other good makes are ‘Arches’ or ‘Waterford’.
Set of Oil Pastels.
Set of Acrylic Paints. Colours - Warm Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue OR Cobalt blue. Cool (Alizarin) Crimson, Lemon Yellow, Phthalo (GS-Green Shade) OR Prussian Blue, Cerulean Blue is a lighter alternative. Paynes Grey, White. (Good brand: Daler-Rowney)
Set of Acrylic Brushes. Size wise a large flat brushe and a mix of these size would be good https://www.cassart.co.uk/painting/brushes-2/synthetic-1/pro-arte-prolene-plus-synthetic-brush-flat-series-008.htm?nosto=searchpage-nosto-1
A3 Pad Acrylic Paper over 220 gms. (Daler-Rowney)
Rubber and Putty Rubber
Long Ruler
Masking Tape

Palette A white ceramic plate makes a good palette, as do yoghurt pots, especially for washes. A large palette with lots of spaces for mixing is particularly useful when working in the studio – as shown above. You will also need two water pots: glass jam jars are good.
