Kurinuki Carved Vessels - Half Day Specialist Workshop

Discover the beautiful Japanese technique of Kurinuki — a sculptural way of working with clay by carving directly from a solid block. In this intimate workshop you’ll learn how to design, carve and refine a unique vessel with bold textures and expressive surfaces.

Your piece will be bisque fired after the workshop.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some clay experience who want to explore new ways of making. Clay and tuition included. If you would like a fully glazed, finished piece, you can book a follow-up Glaze Session (£20).

A variety of tools and knives will be available for mark-making and carving, but you're encouraged to bring your own too.

Limited spaces — early booking recommended.

Maximum number of students: 6

Originating in Japan, kurinuki (meaning “to hollow out”) is hand-forming technique in which you start from a solid block of clay. You add texture or carve/mark the exterior of the vessel and hollow out the interior. The difficulty resides in balancing the outside and inside of the pot.
